The current exclusion of individuals in registered partnerships from adoption, including stepchild adoption, under the registered partnership law goes primarily at the expense of the children. The registered partnership law puts homosexual and bisexual individuals into the absurd situation that they can adopt children as long as they are single, but lose this right when they enter a registered partnership.Furthermore, the categorical exclusion of individuals in registered partnerships from adoption constitutes a massive and unjustifiable discrimination against same-sex couples. After all, even the European Court of Justice for Human Rights has established clearly that homosexuality does not constitute a reason for denying anyone the right to adopt.
